⭐ absolute peak season

january is one of the best months to explore palawan, and honestly, we can see why!! think sunny beach days, turquoise lagoons, island-hopping adventures and snorkelling in water so clear you can spot fish swimming beneath you. conditions are generally perfect for exploring el nido and coron, making it an amazing time to tick off all those bucket-list experiences. it's also peak season, though, so expect more travellers and potentially high flight prices. our advice? book ahead, then get ready dreamy island life with the gals!!

🎉 festivals & events

jan
ati-atihan festival

one of the philippines most colourful and wild festivals in kalibo, aklan. street dancing, tribal costumes and music for days. completely unmissable if you can catch it.

jan
sinulog festival

the huge cebu city festival with some of the most spectacular street processions in all of southeast asia. worth extending your trip for.

must-try dish
adobo

the unofficial national dish - chicken or pork braised in vinegar, soy sauce, garlic and bay leaves until deeply sticky and tender. every family makes it differently and every version is their grandmother's recipe. wherever and whenever you visit, this is the dish you'll eat.

every home, every carinderia, every turo-turo. everywhere.
phrase to learn before you go
tagalog
saan ang comfort room?
where is the bathroom?
say it: sah-an ang com-fort room

essential. filipinos call it the comfort room, not the bathroom. knowing this will save you some confusion!!

staying connected
esim

make sure to grab an esim before you fly. they will let you land with data already switched on, no sim-swapping or airport queues needed. coverage is solid in el nido and coron themselves, just patchy on some of the boat crossings in between!!

download it while you still have wifi — most esims need an internet connection to activate.

destination overview

when to visit the philippines

the philippines is one of the most weather-dependent destinations we run trips to, and we want to be genuinely honest with you about it. the dry season from november through april is when the island hopping in palawan is at its absolute dreamy best. the wet season from june through october brings real rain and can disrupt boat trips. but the cultural experiences, cooking classes and village visits are brilliant in any month, and the wet season does come with the lowest prices and the emptiest beaches you will ever see.

our gwt philippines tour is built around palawan, which has its own microclimate that is slightly drier than other parts of the country. use this guide to find your perfect month, then see the full 10-day itinerary →
