does vpn work in china? our honest 2026 guide for solo female travellers

okay so hereโ€™s the tea!! โ˜•๏ธ planning a trip to China is SO exciting, but we completely understand how overwhelming the tech side of things can feel! If youโ€™ve been stressing about how youโ€™re going to stay in touch with your friends back home, post your aesthetic photos on Instagram, or map out your coffee stops in Beijing don't worry, we've got you covered! ๐Ÿ’Œ

We get asked about this constantly in our DMs and group chats since launching our china trip, so here is our honest, big-sister guide on how VPNs work in China, how to stay connected, and how to keep yourself feeling super safe and supported while exploring! ๐Ÿ’—

so... does a VPN actually work in china?

The short answer? Yes, but you have to do it BEFORE you fly! โœˆ๏ธ

China uses whatโ€™s commonly known as the "Great Firewall," which blocks many of the apps and websites we use daily like Instagram, tiktok, whatsapp, google maps, facetime, and spotify. To access them while youโ€™re there, youโ€™ll need a virtual private network (VPN), which encrypts your internet connection and makes it look like you're browsing from back home in the UK, Europe, or Australia! ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ

Hereโ€™s the catch though: China regularly blocks VPN websites. That means if you arrive at the airport in shanghai or beijing and try to download a VPN app, it won't work!! You MUST download, set up, and test your VPN on your phone and laptop before you board your flight.

our top tips for staying connected & feeling safe

Staying connected isn't just about sharing your sunset pics for solo female travellers, having access to maps, messaging apps, and translation tools is a major safety comfort!! Hereโ€™s how to make sure your tech runs smoothly:

Download TWO VPNs before you go: VPN connections in China can occasionally drop or slow down. Having a primary choice and a backup app installed means youโ€™re never left stranded without internet when trying to order a taxi late at night! ๐Ÿš•

Look into travel eSIMs: Some international roaming plans and travel eSIMs automatically route your data through external servers, allowing you to access blocked apps without even turning on a VPN! It makes navigating new cities so easy and stress-free. we recommend airalo - you can use code GALS for your a discount off your first esim!!

Download local offline apps: google maps isn't always accurate in China, so we recommend downloading Maps.me or Apple Maps for navigation, alongside Google Translate with the offline Chinese language pack downloaded so you can read menus and chat with lovely locals easily! ๐Ÿœ

Set up wechat before travelling: wechat is China's everything-app! Locals use it for messaging, paying for items, and reading menus. setting it up ahead of time will make your day-to-day life on the trip so much easier.

China Solo Travel FAQs

Is it illegal for tourists to use a VPN in China?

This is a huge question we get all the time!! While China restricts unapproved VPN services, millions of tourists, international students, and business travellers use VPNs daily to stay in touch with family, check work emails, and access social media without any issues at all. You typically won't get into trouble for using one as a visitor!

Which VPNs work best in China in 2026?

VPN functionality changes often because of server updates, but services known for strong obfuscation protocols (which hide the fact that you're using a VPN) perform best. we always recommend setting up two different paid VPN providers before leaving home so you always have a fallback!

will my whatsapp and instagram work in china?

Only if you are using an active VPN or a roaming travel eSIM! without one, whatsapp, instagram, facebook, and google services won't load. If you want to drop a quick message to your family or group chat letting them know you've landed safely, make sure your VPN or eSIM is switched on as soon as you touch down! โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ’—

Is China safe for solo female travellers?

China is continuously ranked as one of the safest countries in the world for women to travel in!! ๐ŸŒธ public transport is ultra-modern, clean, and well-lit. the culture is respectful and supportive of tourism. The biggest hurdles for solo women are usually the language barrier and tech setup, which is why going prepared makes all the difference! we do think visiting a country like china can feel overwhelming which is exactly why we've launched our gals who travel china trip!!

How do I pay for things in China if my cards don't work?

China is almost entirely cash-free now! Most places prefer mobile payments via Alipay or WeChat Pay. You can easily link your international visa or mastercard to the Alipay app before your trip to pay for street food, boba teas, trains, and entry tickets seamlessly! Bubble tea runs & matcha made so simple!!

Is group travel better than travelling China completely solo?

Thereโ€™s no right or wrong way, it just depends on the vibe you're looking for! ๐Ÿ’– Travelling solo gives you total freedom, but navigation and language barriers in China can sometimes feel a bit exhausting to handle completely on your own, meeting solo travellers isn't as easy as other destinations in asia and although transport is high end and well connected it's easy to get lost! Joining a group trip gives you instant community, approved accommodation, a group of like minded gals, seamless transport, and a local guide to show you the best experience with from day one!!

If China has been sitting on your travel bucket list or vision board forever, take this as your official sign!! โœจ

Get your tech sorted, book that ticket, and get ready for the most incredible adventure. And if you'd rather leave all the tricky logistics, booking, and navigation to someone else so you can just turn up and enjoy? We'd love to see you at the welcome dinner!!
