But if youβre planning to head out solo, itβs completely understandable to have a few nerves kicking about safety and how you navigate this big and beautiful country so let us give you a first hand experience from the gals who have been!!

Honestly? Yes, absolutely! Japan is consistently ranked as one of the safest destinations in the world, making it an absolute dream for women taking their very first solo trip. The streets are incredibly clean, public transport runs like clockwork, and the culture is built on deep respect and hospitality!!!

Major train stations and subways have English translations, and the locals are so incredibly kind if you look lost, someone will almost always try to help you out but having a local guide really does change your trip. instead of relying on strangers and google translate you have someone who knows the hidden restaurants, the best time to visit for less tourists and incredible experiences only the people that live their know. a local guide will change your whole japan expeirence!!

2. booking accommodation where you feel safe
If you're looking for comfort and peace of mind, Japan has some of the coolest accommodation options on earth!!! the ones you see across tiktok or instagram reels! If you're staying in hotels, you'll find they are ultra-secure. If you want a fun hostel vibe to meet other like-minded gals, Japan offers incredibly clean, stylish capsule and boutique cute hostels, many even offer female only dorms or floors altogether!!!, which gives that extra layer of comfort and safety when you're winding down for the night.
3. eating alone abroad
so the first time we did this, it felt weird, you think people are looking at you, wondering what you're doing travelling solo but honestly, no one cares, no ones looking and it can be one of the most liberating experiences of solo travel. once you do it once, it just gets easier and easier but if the thought of sitting alone at a restaurant gives you a bit of a anxiety, Japan is literally built for solo diners and is a great place to experience on your travels!!! Because of the local working culture, tons of restaurants especially ramen spots like Ichiran have individual booths where you order via a ticket machine and eat in total privacy. It is completely normalized, super casual, and takes away all the stress of dining alone!!!
The Best Places to Visit in Japan as a Solo Female Traveller
Tokyo
An absolute must-visit. Itβs well... massive!!! but itβs broken down into distinct neighbourhoods that feel incredibly safe to wander through. Head to Shibuya and Harajuku for shopping and people-watching, or it's also a fun night out in Shinjuku!!! grab your gals, your guide and head out for cocktails or kareoke!!!
Kyoto
If you want to feel totally zen, Kyoto is the spot for you. Think stunning bamboo groves, iconic torii gates, and beautiful traditional tea houses. Itβs a bit of a slower pace compared to Tokyo, making it the perfect place to read a good book, unwind, and just soak in the culture. 10/10 would recommend!!
Osaka
Known as "Japan's Kitchen," Osaka has a much more laid-back, outgoing vibe. The locals are famously chatty, and the street food scene in Dotonbori is incredibleeeeee. They are clearly marked with pink signs on the platform and on the train windows. Itβs a super thoughtful feature that adds extra peace of mind when the commute gets packed!
Is public transport easy to use?
The train system in Japan is incredible!!! To make it super cheap and less stress, grab a digital Suica or Pasmo card on your Apple Wallet before you arrive. You can tap your phone at the barriers, and it works on subways, buses, and even at convenience stores. For travelling between major cities, the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) is fast, reliable, and honestly an adventure in itself.
