the ultimate australia packing list for solo gals (honest 2026 guide) <3

g'day!! so you've decided to take the leap and head down under?! australia is one of the ultimate rite-of-passage trips for solo female travellers and so many of our gals decide to explore by booking a girls only group trip for peace of mind. from surfing in byron bay and sailing through the whitsundays to exploring rooftop bars in brisbane, oz has it all and every year we get so excited for a uk winter/aussie summer season for our gals!!
the biggest mistake people make when packing for australia? assuming it's boiling hot everywhere, all year round! australia is massive (literally the size of europe!), so sydney in winter requires warm layers, while tropical north queensland is warm and humid. The weather tends to get warmer as you head up the east coast but with most trips starting in sydney and ending in airlie beach or cairns you need to be prepared for all climates!!
here is our honest, tested guide on packing for your ultimate australian adventure!
3 rules for packing for australia
the australian sun is NO joke: because of the thin ozone layer over australia, the UV index gets extremely high. high-protection sunscreen (SPF 50+), a good hat, and UV-blocking sunglasses are non-negotiable for us!!
pack for micro-climates: sydney and melbourne can experience four seasons in one day! layers are your best friend. Think london in may, one day it’s rainy, the next it’s cloudy with a bit of sun, the next we’re having a heatwave. Be prepared for some sunshine but also a downpour.
keep it versatile: australians have a super relaxed, laid back style. high-quality basics that you can mix and match work best and there’s some incredible shopping once you touch down!!

the clothing list: east coast & city vibes
Here’s exactly what we’d pack if we were heading to australia on a solo trip up the east coast!!
- 4-5 swimwear / bikinis: for beach days in byron, boat trips in the whitsundays, and ocean pools in sydney. You’ll find yourself at the beach or swimming lots as you travel along so it’s always great to have a few options!! These can also be dressed up or down in surf towns when you head out in the evening!!
- 2x activewear sets (sports bra/tops + leggings): australia has an amazing active outdoor lifestyle! perfect for coastal walks (like the bondi to coogee walk) or hiking in national parks.
- 2x denim shorts / casual shorts: classic wardrobe staples but are perfect for throwing on after the beach or dressing up in the evening.
- 3x casual t-shirts / tank tops: breathable cotton basics are essential!! Pack a few t shirts and tanks so you can mix and match as you travel.
- 2x evening outfits: melbourne and sydney have incredible bar scenes and the girls love heading out for a drink or to watch a beautiful sunset over darling harbour, we also visit brisbane along our trip and there’s some gorgeous bars and restaurants!!
- 1x light denim jacket or zip up hoodie: for cool coastal evenings and breezy city nights
- 1x warm fleece or jumper essential if you're travelling southern australia (sydney/melbourne) outside of peak summer! It’s also perfect when you’re catching greyhound buses or internal flights!!
footwear for down under
- 1x clean, comfortable trainers: for walking around cities, airport days, and coastal walks!!
- 2x sandals / birkenstocks: sturdy footwear or sandals for days out exploring!!
- 2x flip-flops or as the aussies like to call them “thongs”: perfect for throwing on to head to the beach, the pool or in the hostel showers.

sun safety & australian essentials
SPF 50+ sunscreen: aussie sunscreens (like cancer council or ultra violette) are some of the best in the world. buy a big tub when you land!
wide-brim sun hat or cap: essential for long days out on boats or walking along beaches.
microfibre beach towel: quick-drying and sand-free, perfect for throwing in your tote bag.
type I travel adapter: australia uses three-flat-pin plug sockets so make sure to bring one!!
australia packing FAQs
what should I pack if I'm visiting melbourne or sydney?
melbourne is famous for having "four seasons in one day"! even in summer, carry a light jacket or cardigan in your bag. winter in melbourne (june–august) gets genuinely cold (around 10°C–14°C), so bring a warm coat, jeans, and boots if travelling then!
do I need formal clothes for nights out in australia?
australian nightlife is very casual and laid-back, especially in beach towns like byron bay or magnetic island! in big cities like sydney and melbourne, nightlife is stylish but rarely super formal, trainers, smart sandals, dresses, or trousers with a nice top are completely fine!
should I bring a backpack or a suitcase for australia?
either works well for australia! As you’re doing a lot of travelling we’d recommend a soft shell suitcase or 60-70l backpacks tend to work just as good!!
