the ultimate sri lanka packing list for solo gals (honest 2027 guide) <3

sri lanka is honestly one of the most magical places we've ever been!! sunrise hikes, elephants on safari, misty tea plantations, the iconic ella train and golden beaches, all in one tiny island. no wonder it's one of our best sellers every single year!!the tricky bit? packing for sri lanka means packing for a few different climates. it's hot and humid on the coast, cooler and misty up in the hill country, and you'll need temple-appropriate outfits along the way too. one of our gals once turned up to the temple of the tooth in a side split skirt (lol that was me) and I had to borrow a sarong at the door.
whether you're joining our sri lanka girls trip or heading out solo, here's our honest gals who travel guide on exactly what to bring!

3 things you MUST know before packing for sri lanka
- temples need covered shoulders and knees: you'll visit the dambulla cave temple, the golden buddha and the temple of the tooth in kandy, so modest outfits are a must. you'll also take your shoes off, so slip-on sandals make life easy!
- the hill country is cooler than you think: nuwara eliya and ella can feel chilly, especially in the mornings and on the train. pack a layer or two!!
- it's humid and it can rain: showers come and go quickly, so breathable fabrics and a light rain jacket will keep you comfy.

clothing: island vibes, temple ready & adventure
- 3x wide-leg linen or cotton trousers: cool, comfy and temple-appropriate. our ultimate go-to for travel days!!
- 1-2x midi or maxi dresses (with sleeves or a cover-up): perfect for temples and dinner in kandy or unawatuna.
- 2 sarongs / light scarves: throw one in your bag every day for temple visits, then use it as a beach towel in unawatuna!
- 4β5x vest tops & tees: breathable cotton basics you can mix and match.
- 2β3x lightweight shorts: for beach days, glamping and chilled afternoons in ella.
- 1x activewear set: for the sigiriya sunrise climb and little adam's peak hike. it's a lot of steps, gals!!
- 3β4x bikinis / swimsuits: for the beach in unawatuna, hotel pools and waterfall stops.
- 1x warm jumper or fleece: essential for early starts, misty nuwara eliya and the ella train.
- 1x lightweight rain jacket: packs down tiny and saves you in a tropical downpour!
- neutral colours for safari: this is a persoanl fav for us but deffo not essential khaki, beige or olive tones are perfect for the jeep safari in udawalawe (and look so cute in pics!!)

footwear: what do you ACTUALLY wear?
- 1x sturdy trainers: for sigiriya rock, little adam's peak and nine arch bridge. the paths can be slippery after rain!
- 1x slip-on sandals / birkenstocks: you'll be taking them off at every temple, so easy on, easy off is key!!
- 1x flip-flops: for the beach, the glamping site and hotel showers.
DO NOT BRING: heels or anything you can't walk up a few hundred steps in! sri lanka is all about comfy, practical footwear.
toiletries, health & tummy prep
- SPF 50+ sunscreen: the sun is strong, especially at the beach and on sunrise hikes.
- mosquito repellent: a must for jungle glamping in udawalawe and dinner at the local farming village!
- electrolyte sachets: the humidity is no joke, so keep hydrated on long travel days.
- imodium & rehydration salts: sri lankan curries are delicious but spicy, so come prepared just in case!
- motion sickness tablets: the roads through the hill country are winding, so these help on van transfers.
- hand sanitiser & tissues: handy for local toilets and street food stops.
- period products: easier to bring your favourites from home, especially for days out in rural areas.
electronics & travel essentials
- universal travel adapter: sri lanka uses a mix of type D, G and M sockets. UK three-pin (type G) plugs fit some, but a universal adaptor saves the stress!!
- power bank: for long travel days and the glamping night in the jungle.
- waterproof phone pouch: for waterfall stops and beach days.
- small daypack: for hikes, the train and the safari.
- crossbody bag with a zip: for markets in kandy and exploring galle fort.
- some cash in sri lankan rupees: cards work in hotels and cities, but you'll want cash for villages, markets and tuk-tuks!
sri lanka packing FAQs
what should i wear to temples in sri lanka?
cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes (and hats) before entering. a linen trouser and tee combo or a midi dress with a sarong over your shoulders works perfectly!
is it cold in ella and nuwara eliya?
it's much cooler than the coast, especially in the early mornings and evenings. a jumper and long trousers are all you need, you won't need a big winter coat!!
what bag should i bring to sri lanka?
a 40β60L soft backpack or soft-shell suitcase works best. you'll be on private vans and the ella train, so keep it light and easy to carry on and off!
do i need a visa for sri lanka?
most visitors need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) before arrival. it's easy to apply online, but always check the latest rules for your passport!
