jan peak paradise

⭐beautiful on the south-west coast

january is sri lanka at its absolute best, and we can see why!! the south-west monsoon is long gone, the west and south coast are dry and sunny, and whale watching off mirissa is at its peak. the sea is calm, the sunsets over galle fort are glorious, and the train from kandy towards ella is as dreamy as everyone says. it's peak season, so grab your spot early, then get ready for beach days, fresh seafood and long dinners with your new favourite travel gals.

destination overview

when to visit sri lanka

sri lanka's weather can be a little confusing, and there's one thing worth knowing before you book: the island doesn't have just one rainy season!! it has two monsoon systems, which affect different parts of the country at different times of year. the south-west monsoon (yala) brings rain to the south and west coasts from around may to september, while the north-east monsoon (maha) affects the east and north from around november to february.

so, why does this matter for our trip? our route takes us from negombo down to unawatuna, exploring the west and south of the island. that means the south-west monsoon is the one to pay attention to when planning your dates. you'll often find generic sri lanka weather guides recommending the east coast during our summer months, but remember, that's not the coastline our route follows!!

so, when should you visit? december to march is generally the best time for our negombo to unawatuna route, with sunnier days, calmer seas and lovely beach weather. may to september brings more south-west monsoon rain, while october and november can be particularly unpredictable thanks to the inter-monsoon storms. of course, tropical weather never comes with guarantees, but if you're dreaming of sunshine and beach days, december to march is our top pick!!
