jan sunshine, calm seas and peak season vibes

⭐ great · peak season

january is one of the best months to visit thailand's andaman coast. the dry season is in full swing, bringing blue skies, warm sunshine and generally calm seas around phuket and the surrounding islands. it's a brilliant time to explore koh phi phi, koh lanta and the similan islands, where conditions are excellent for boat trips, snorkelling and beach days. it's also a great choice for first-time solo gals who want reliable weather and plenty of other travellers around. the only catch? everyone else has the same idea, so expect busier beaches and higher prices. our advice? get those dates booked early!!

old phuket town events

phuket's sino-portuguese old town hosts street markets, food stalls and cultural events around the chinese new year period, with lanterns and lion dances in the lanes.

must-try dish
pad see ew

wide, chewy rice noodles stir-fried in a super-hot wok with dark soy sauce, chinese broccoli and egg. it's smoky, savoury street-food comfort and an easy first order if you're new to thai food.

phrase to learn before you go
thai
khob khun ka
thank you (said by a woman)
say it: kop-koon-kah

men say khob khun khrap instead, but either way it always goes down well (and thai people love it when you give it a go!)

staying connected
esim

grab an esim before you fly, they will let you land with data already switched on, no sim-swapping or airport queues needed. coverage is strong in bangkok, chiang mai and the main islands, and can get patchy in remote jungle and on some boat crossings.

download it while you still have wifi, most esims need an internet connection to activate

destination overview

when to visit thailand

thailand's south has two coastlines, and they don't follow the same weather calendar!! the gulf side, home to koh samui, koh phangan and koh tao, has a different rainy season to the andaman coast, where you'll find phuket, krabi, koh phi phi and the similan islands. it's worth knowing the difference before you book, especially if you're dreaming of beach days and island hopping.

our gals who travel trip is based entirely on the andaman coast, starting and ending in phuket, with island hopping and those dreamy floating bungalow stays along the way. the best time for our route is generally november to april, with december to march bringing the most reliable sunshine, calmer seas and brilliant conditions for exploring. the similan islands are also seasonally closed, usually from mid-may to mid-october, so they're not an option during the green season. travelling between june and august? we'd recommend looking at the gulf islands instead, where the weather is generally more settled at that time of year!!
